Easts seconds, through a combination of determination and luck, created heartache for Macquarie Uni with a last touch goal to draw the game. It was a great feeling to be on the right side of a comeback after several similar games this season had gone against us.
From the first pushback the game settled into a pattern of Easts controlling the ball and Macquarie counter attacking. Macquarie made the most of their chances to lead 2-1 at the break whilst Easts had created and squandered (including a disallowed goal) several opportunities in the circle.
The Easts comeback came with six minutes to go and down 3-1 after a second half penalty corner had been converted by Macquarie. A great finish from Jonesy in a scrappy goalmouth melee brought the score back to 3-2 after a period of Easts domination. Easts then were awarded a penalty corner as the last play of the day. Everyone was called up to the circle and strategy was planned, however in a moment of ad lib the stop at the top of the circle was dummied and the ball went back to Gary. Gary, not being one to pass in open play, unusually he evaluated the situation and crisply found Al's stick who deflected the ball around the keeper into the back of the goal.
A great comeback from the seconds and a deserved draw. Special mention has to be made of Gary who passed the final pass despite being wobbled earlier in the game when he lost control of his body and accelerated, like an out of control car driven by a blind mental patient, into Will Harvey. Will, we are happy to report is ok now, Gary, as exhibited by his last ditch pass, is hopelessly off kilter.
